One evening, a young boy decided to go for a walk in the moonlight. As it turned out, there wasn't any moon that night nor was there a path to walk on. So the ever-inventive Harold simply drew them, embarking on an incredible journey that would take him around the world and back. Resourceful and brave, Harold creates the world he wants to explore using nothing more than a big purple crayon and his sky's-the-limit imagination.
The "Harold" books by Crockett Johnson have captivated families for more than fifty years, celebrating the unique way children see the world. Harold and some of his zany adventures are brought to the Skirball Center stage in the form of life-size puppets, masks, magic and music.
Audience members are welcome to attend a mask-building workshop prior to this performance. The workshop begins at 1:30pm in the Skirball Center lobby.
Recommended for ages 5 and up.
Performance length: 60 minutes
The Skirball Center's Big Red Chair Family Series is made possible in part with support from Joan Ganz Cooney, L. Jay and Mary Ellen Oliva and NYU Family Care.
The Adventures of Harold and the Purple Crayon is an Enchantment Theater Company production with music by Charles Gilbert, book adapted by Jennifer Blatchley Smith, Leslie Reidel and Landis Smith and based on the beloved book series by Crockett Johnson.
