A play by Richard Schechner and Saviana Stanescu
Directed by Richard Schechner
Produced by East Coast Artists
YokastaS is a contemporary never-before-told original story about Yokasta, Oedipus' mother and wife. It is a new play written by Romanian-born playwright Saviana Stanescu and Richard Schechner, and a new perspective on the untold parts of an old story. The play moves through time from ancient Greece to Contemporary TV talk shows portraying Yokasta at four different ages and stages of her "career" in womanhood, from young girl to old woman. Four different actresses play Yokasta, emphasizing the plurality of this complex character. YokastaS skillfully combines and contrasts tragedy, irony, sexuality, murder, and intellect. It juxtaposes the innocence of girlhood with the brutality of women's fate in history.
Founded by NYU professor Richard Schechner in 1991, East Coast Artists (ECA) is much more than a theatre company. In addition to producing critically acclaimed work directed by Schechner and others, ECA builds bridges between professional theatre artists, students, educators and professionals beyond the arts in the US and abroad, by crafting new American theatre and performance techniques and research that draws on ancient and non-Western traditions.
In addition to performances of YokastaS, ECA will sponsor the following related events:
